boston doubleheader & ALCS drama

After spending the weekend in Denver working on ConQwest (shameless plug), I couldn't pass up the opportunity to come back to Boston for the weekend to visit mom and dad, my friends the Patriots (on the verge of their 20th straight win) and the Red Sox who were back in Fenway, trailing the Yankees 3 games to 0 and facing elimination from the ALCS. Best part = two games in one day! Pats game at 1pm, Sox game at 8pm.

Check out my Mom's lazy eye. Just kidding, it's really not lazy... it's more of a one-time kkkrazy thing.

My flight from Denver got in at 6am and Big Dig was waiting for me at the airport (read: best dad ever) Came back to Medway, slept for a few hours then piled in my dad's car and headed to the game. On the way out of the house, Jonathan smuggled out this beanbag-cat thing (that holds doors open, you know) and hid it in the car.

My mom was pleanty surprised to see that one of her knickknacks had escaped the house.

As was the cat.

Pats game at 1pm vs. Seattle. Who knew, but their starting quarterback - Matt Hassleback - went to my high school (graduated a year above me). The sign directly above out seats: "Welcome Back Hass".

A view of the field. These seats rock.

Digi-zoom on my new digicam isn't so bad either.

We went through a round of portraits...

Curious.

Huh.

And a round of food.

Chowder.

Hot dog.

And we kicked off our mustache contest (best moustache by Thanksgiving wins).

Jay.

Me.

Dad.

Another family portrait (minus Katie, oops). Stoopid exposure.

Heidi Klum on the jumbo-tron giving away $1000 towards Victoria's Secret.

The game was a little closer than we would have liked near the end, but the Pats ended up on top for the 20th win in a row. Note two guys with giant "20" sign.

On the way out we saw this minivan with a, come'on!, "Dunkin Donuts" sticker? For real?

Act II - Game 4 @ Fenway Park

We were home for about 40 minutes (just long enough to charge my digi and hit a bucket of balls into the woods) before Jay and I took off for Fenway.

Here, me + Jay driving in. There's a slamming music video that goes along with this pic.

Passing Fenway on the Mass Pike.

Walking by the Pru, which always looks lovely this time of year.

Pre-game, we met up w/ Sir Jon Gorey (mastermind behind The Scarlet Letter) for a drink at Who's On First.

Pow!

Jay and hit up the sausage guy right before the game. We had ambitious plans to hit the "Triple Crown" - one sausage before the first pitch, one during the game and one after the last out (but before getting in the car) - but we gave up on that plan even before the 4th.

A simple twist of the cap let us know that Jesus was on our side tonight.. free coke!

The seats we've been sitting in since we were wee little lads - Section 30, row GG, seats 9 + 10.

Lots of interesting folk at the game, including this dude with a bag on his head.

Not to be confused with this D-Bag holding his shameless TV promo sign.

... or even worse, this gaggle of D-Bags who kept moving their way up to the front row, heckling fans along the way. At one point, the guy two rows in front of us threw a full beer at (I think) these guys (not sure why you would throw a full cup of anything - you know its not going anywhere) and got himself ejected.

At one point the scoreboard looked like this...

Then like this.

Then a little something like this...

... as the Sox edged out the Yankees in the 12th...

.. thanks to a David Ortiz homerun.

Is my head really that big?

$38 for tank of gas can S a D.

We didn't get back to Medway till 2am or so. Jonathan rallied early morning (8am) and drove Big Red back to NYC (baby's gotta work!) while Johnny No Job (read: me) slept in till noon.

Big Dig and I rallied early afternoon and made a field trip to Vermont to drop off some furniture.

We stopped for lunch at some hot dog stand along the way.

And then stopped for lunch #2 at the Vermont Country Deli where high school girls...

... serve up delicious pulled pork...

... which was perfect for the 30 mins left in the trip.

Note: If you ever make it to VT, drop me an email and I'll tell you were to stop.

Leaves changing colors...

... at 65 mph.

Katie was at the house the weekend before and left us with a surprise batch of 100 empty beers.

Dig admiring the view.

How cute.

We watched the first few innings of the game at the house then motivated down to a bar called TC's in "downtown" Dover (, VT). TC's is owned by the father of Olympic snowboarding gold medalist Kelly Clark (who's home mountain = Mount Snow). This place is rad - all of Kelly's old snowboards on the wall PLUS they let us hang out at the bar until the game was over - all 14 innings of it. I watched most of the extra innings with my head on the bar.

Fast forward to Tuesday night - Game 6. We did pre-game at Aunt Lillian's as Gam and Anne were leaving for Florida the next morning. On the menu: PIBs! (though loyal teendrama fans may recognize that these don't hold a candle to the masterpieces I've created in the past).

Aunt Lil's place = fancy. I had to scour through my brother's closets to find suitable attire.

My old student council tie + Jonathan's old semi formal jacket + some old short sleeve button down.

20 mins before the game - we stopped in surprise my mom at bowling night.

Note little balls, little pins = candlepin.

Double spare! Get out!

Game 6. Dig watched safely from his chair.

I hid behind my laptop.

We all know how this end up - A-Rod's slap and riot gear. I was taking laps around the room to calm myself down.

Next morning: On the day of Game 7, I cowboy'ed up with my old school headphones and made a road trip to Barnes and Nobles...

.. to check out dodgeball in this month's Fast Company (Nov 2004, pg. 78).

And here we are now, I am (obviously) killing time till Game 7 (2:59 now, game starts at 8pm). Sorry about all the boring pics. I hope we can still be friends.

Digicam is all charged up and I'm heading in town in about an hour and 45 mins. Let's hope there's more of a good story to tell.
