halloween 06 and the penthouse trifecta of awesomeness
Oh, Halloween on a Tuesday, you're so tricky. See, last year Halloween fell on a Monday, meaning that since Monday touches the weekend, people are more apt to dress up *all weekend long* (hence last year's Four Days of Halloween).
But this year, Halloween fell on a Tuesday, which makes it easier to stand-by the "Halloween is only one night a year. I'm only dressing up one night a year" rule. Most of us avoided Carney's collection of 50 Brooklyn-based Halloween parties over the weekend (sorry Mandy. Hey, I even skipped Battjer + Farb's + Scott.F's throwdowns... so, sorry about that too), instead opting to save it up for Tuesday night's Flavorpill party.
About 800 of us met up at Dusk Lounge beforehand, including such teendrama regulars as (let's try to do this left to right):Lindsey (gymnist?), Kevin.K (Marty McFly!), Alison (er, zombie? what?), Becca (Audrey Hepburn), Courtney (someone from Life Aquatic?), Dianne (Robert Palmer guitar girl?), Anne (slutty BoPeep), Jen (crazy spider legs), Grellan (Crocodile Dundee Tom Selleck Burt Reynolds) and me (Slutty R2D2).
Slutty R2D2 = old Amazon box + $33 worth of Filene's basement lingerie (two 36C bras, three pairs of XL panties). I sent this cameraphone pic to my Mom.
I guess she disapproved.
Wait, these pics are out of order. I forgot that we met at the Magician first and *then* took the subway to Dusk. But whatever.
Wise ol' Will McD says: "Even though I was really happy with my costume, I have to say that Kevin was the best by far… Any time you can pull of a Michael J. Fox costume you are IT."
We journeyed over to Flavorpill around 11p, cued up in the huge line outside, battled the evil doorgirl (who strangely didn't have any of our names on the list - sweet!) and then made our way through the, what?, six different rooms o' dance parties. fourth of july blackout in the middle of nowhere, vermont
Hungover Friday Lazy Sunday = perfect for a little 4th of July teendrama recap! Four day weekend + no real plans = me + four ladies made the trek to Vermont. We should have left Friday night, but I drank 800 beers instead (annnnnd YP + Becca went to a show in Bklyn). Saturday morning departure seemed like a good idea till we got stuck in the worst traffic I've ever done seen right past the Triboro. In our moment of (traffic) weakness, we turned to British Jess (er, the RR's nav system). The good: the car led us far far far away and through slightly less crowded roads; The bad: we took the most back-woods roads ever and it took us like 6 hours to get to VT.
Oh, so the masterplan for the whole weekend was suppoed to be: chill by the pool on Saturday, drive to Auntie Jean's Fourth of July Pool Party Cookout Extravaganza(tm) in Stoughton, MA on Sunday and then drive back to VT Sunday night and spend Monday and Tuesday chilling by the pool sipping on Bartender Steve drinks. But, since we didn't get up there till like 3pm on Saturday (missed the England penalty kick game *and* the Brazil game), when Sunday morning rolled around, no one wanted to make the 3 hour (!!) trek from VT -> Stoughton... so we ended up bailing on Auntie Jean's (sorry, AJ).
Oh, and it was raining - like pouring - in VT. We figured the weather in Stoughton was probably crappy too (but apparently it was super nice out).
Sunday + raining + halfpipe. I did the tarp on / tarp off / tarp on / tarp off thing about 10 times - trying to dry the thing out while protecting it from the downpour.
The winter thaw wasn't too kind to the ramp...
... I'm going to neeed to replace the flatbottom sometime this summer.
Anyway, so before the Sunday downpour started, Becca + Alison went to the pool. And then the lightning came. And then the power went out. And then the lifeguard shot the water-safety-first foghorn right into their ears in hopes that they'd get out of the pool. Continued... Sun 7/9 @ 9:22 PM | # link| Comments (1) Tuesday June 7, 2005
weekend away at Adult Camp
So, this past weekend was Adult Camp. The story goes something like this: Becca's friend Dana used to be a camp counselor at this camp up in the Berkshiers (right on the MA / NY border). Every year, the folks at the camp allow the old counselors to come back with some of their friends a few weeks before the camp opens to the kids (hence, "Adult Camp"). Last year, Becca and crew had the Best Time Ever(tm) - this year we were invited to tag along.
This is actually the last pic I took before we left, but I figured I'd lead off with it anyway. There were about 15 of us total that made the trip.
(ps: Lots of recaps for this one. Also see: Becca + Youngna + Josh over at sixfive.net)
Dana sent an email around a few days before telling us what we needed to bring: towels, sheets, some cards, a blanket. I underpacked I guess, thinking we'd be locked away in our warm little cabins. Instead, we were rolling with three-wall cabins (three bunks per cabin). Good times, for those with sleeping bags (hold on, we'll get to that).
Team Big Red 2.0 (me + Grellan + Becca + Youngna + Krucoff) left NYC Friday around 6pm. The route is pretty straightforward for about 95% of the trip, with the last 5% being crazy unmarked, uncharted roads. We made plans to meet Dana at a local pub right near the camp so she could guide us back.
One burger and two beers later, we left to make the 10 minute trip to camp. As I was backing my car our of my parking spot (a little fast admittedly), a cop car was rounding the corner. And, er, I nearly clipped him.
So, the cop turns around, follows me for a minute or so, throws on his lights and pulls me over. The conversation went a little like this:
Him: Do you know why I pulled you over?
Me: Sure, I pulled out a little quick and almost hit you as you turned the corner.
Him: Yup. You been drinking tonight?
Me: I had one drink with dinner.
Him: Step out of the car, please.
