winter @ attitash FAQ

Note: Last updated on Fri. Nov. 30... just added directions.

What's the deal again?
My parents are being super cool and letting me live in their ski house for the winter. It's a good setup - all I have to pay are the utilities and I've already got a car all worked out. Also, I just scored a job as a snowboard instructor @ Attitash Mt. so I'll be riding all winter (my goals is 100+ days on the snow!).

So, where's the house?
The house is just past North Conway in NH - about a 3 1/2 hour ride from Boston. There's prob some way to fly/take a train/bus there, but I don't know anything about that. I'm sure the internet holds all the answers.

You got directions?
Ah, I typed up the best directions ever... email me if you have questions.

How long are you going to live up there for?
Well, I'm in NH now (been here since Friday 11/10) and I imagine I'll be there through April 1, 2002.

What did you do with your apartment?
Well, the original plan was to sublet it through April. But due to market conditions (e.g. we were paying a lot for a small place) and the fact that the landlord wanted to actually raise our rent, all three of moved out on 12/1 (actually, I left in mid-November). The latest is that the landlord can't find anyone to take the place and they have since lowered the rent to around $2700. Email me if you want me to put you in touch with the landlord.

Okay, so what is this house in NH like?
The condo is pretty sweet: 3 bedrooms (6 beds), 2 baths, jacuzzi and sauna (I even threw some pics online). Of course, we've got the stereo, some HBO and a little PlayStation2 going on -- I'm also (still) looking into getting a cable modem/DSL hookup.

So, can I come to visit... or stay for the whole winter?
Sure - anyone can come up anytime. Come for a weekend, a week, a month, whatever. I don't care. Come and live there all winter if you want. The more the merrier.

But I don't have any ski equipment!
I have two snowboards - my old one is still in good shape and up for grabs (it needs a pair of bindings, though). If you want to ski, there are three or four pairs of skis (and boots) just kicking around for you to use. There's also extra jackets, snow pants, gloves, etc.

But I'll need a jobby job!
I've talked to some of the HR folk at Attitash and there are plenty of jobs to be had, it's just earlier to get them before the new year. My plan is actually to be an instructor a few days a week, then work in guest services (selling tix?) the other days and maybe get a job working at a bar or something.

But I can't be an instructor!
Didn't you read that last paragraph? If you want to ski all season, suck it up and work as a lift operator or selling tickets or serving beers at the lodge. It's wicked cheap up there anyway (esp. if you get a free season pass).

Is there anything else to do around there?
It's NH - it's not NYC and it's not Killington, but the scene is full of locals and lots of little bars that pick up during the season. Downtown is about 5 minutes away and the people at Attitash say that there are around 300 people that do this same thing every season - just come up and work for the winter.

Are there any other mountains in the area?
Well, Attitash is the closest mountain away (10 mins) and there are about 4 others in the area (Wildcat, Black, Cranmore, Bretton Woods). Sunday River in ME is about an hour away; Killington is prob 2+ hours.

What if I have other questions?
Just email me, dens@dodgeball.com.

I baked you some cookies - where should I send them?
Wow - that's so sweet of you. Send them to...
